However, when exploring maps with different information across multiple layers and scales, users experience information discontinuity. Bancada is a multi-display system developed to investigate the exploration of geospatial information using multiple mobile devices in a multi-display environment. In Bancada, tablets are Zoomable Magic Lenses that augment, through specific geospatial layers, an overview map displayed on a tabletop or on a wall display. Users interact with lenses using touch gestures to pan and zoom; and multi-layer maps can be built by overlapping different lenses. Currently, Bancada is being used to research user interfaces separated across multiple devices and interactions with high-resolution mobile devices. Future work with Bancada includes (i) evaluating the user performance when using one tablet or multiple tablets to control all lenses; (ii) exploring what and how interactions can be performed on an overview map; and (iii) exploring how lenses can be changed.Item Open Access CipherCard: Enhancing Security on Common Touchscreen Devices using Two-factor Authentication(2014-10-29) Seyed, Teddy; Yang, Xing-Dong; Tang, Anthony; Greenberg, Saul; Gu, Jiawei; Zhu, Bin; Cao, XiangWe present CipherCard, a physical token that defends against shoulder-surfing attacks on user authentication on touchscreen devices. Placed over a touchscreen pin-pad, CipherCard remaps a user’s touch points on the physical token to different locations on the pin-pad (i.e. as a substitution cipher). It translates a visible user password into a different system password received by a touchscreen, hiding the system password from observers. CipherCard enhances authentication security through Two-Factor Authentication (TFA), in that both the correct user password and a specific card are needed for authentication. We explore the design space of CipherCard, and describe three implemented variations each with unique capabilities. Based on user feedback, we discuss the security and usability implications of CipherCard, and describe several avenues for continued exploration.Item Metadata only Exploring 3D volumetric medical data using mobile devices(IEEE, 2014) Seyed, Teddy; Rodrigues, Francisco Marinho; Maurer, Frank; Tang, AnthonyMedical imaging specialists have traditionally used keyboard and mouse based techniques and interfaces for examining both 2D and 3D medical images, but with newer imaging technologies resulting in significantly larger volumes of 3D medical images, these techniques that have become increasingly cumbersome for imaging specialists. To replace traditional techniques, using mobile devices present an effective means for navigating and exploring complex 3D medical data sets, as they provide increased fluidity and flexibility, leveraging people's existing skills with tangible objects. 3D interactions using mobile devices may provide benefit for imaging specialists, but little is known about using these interactions in the medical imaging domain. In this paper, we explore the design of 3D interaction techniques using mobile devices and preliminary feedback from imaging specialists suggests that these interactions may be a viable solution for the medical imaging domain.Item Open Access Mannequette: Understanding and Enabling Collaboration and Creativity on Avant-Garde Fashion-Tech Runways(2019-06-23) Seyed, Teddy; Tang, AnthonyDrawing upon multiple disciplines, avant-garde fashion-tech teams push the boundaries between fashion and technology. Many are well-trained in envisioning aesthetic qualities of garments, but few have formal training on designing and fabricating technologies themselves. We introduce Mannequette, a prototyping tool for fashion-tech garments that enables teams to experiment with interactive technologies at early stages of their design processes. Mannequette provides an abstraction of light-based outputs and sensor-based inputs for garments through a DJ mixer- like interface that allows for dynamic changes and recording/playback of visual effects. The base of Mannequette can also be incorporated into the final garment, where it is then connected to the final components. We conducted an 8-week deployment study with eight design teams who created new garments for a runway show. Our results revealed Mannequette allowed teams to repeatedly consider new design and technical options early in their creative processes, and to communicate more effectively across disciplinary backgrounds.Item Metadata only A Test-Driven Approach for Extracting Libraries of Reusable Components from Existing Applications(Springer, 2011) Selim, Elaf; Ghanam, Yaser; Burns, Chris; Seyed, Teddy; Maurer, FrankIn agile approaches such as Extreme Programming, time is not spent on making sure that system components can be reused in similar systems. Therefore, there is a need to investigate whether reuse can be achieved by extracting reusable assets from existing applications. This paper presents an approach that relies on refactoring and testing practices for extracting reusable assets from existing applications. The approach creates reusable APIs in a bottom-up fashion, on demand when a new application might benefit from component in an existing application. The extraction process is guided and supported by the usage examples and the testing scenarios in the existing application and the new one.
