The Health Telematics Unit was a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, educators, learners, students, and partners who fostered and encouraged innovative quality research, evaluation, consultation, teaching, and service in the area of telehealth. This was the first program of its kind in Canada to combine a research program, using the latest advances in telehealth research and evaluation, with a training program.

Item Open Access Collaborative Space Activities that Support Medical Programs in Romania(Presented at Med-e-tel 2005 Conference in Luxembourg., 2005-04-08) Piso, M.J.Space-Based Technology Applications to eHealth: Following a general introduction to the present space technology particular capabilities, the presentation will focus on the Romanian Space Programme in the space telemedicine specific development. The applications of global satellite positioning were used together with space communications and with a background map obtained by a high-resolution remote sensing satellite. In the present stage, the telemedicine process is to be developed by reorganizing the data management and processing on a network basis by means of GRID procedures. Conclusions and recommendations are given at the end of the paper.Item Open Access Establishment of Telehealth Centers in Selected Hospitals in Zambia(Presented at Med-e-tel 2005 Conference in Luxembourg., 2005-04-08) Miti, S.; Mwape, B.Space-Based Technology Applications to eHealth: In 2003 the Ministry of Health through the Permanent Secretary formed the Tele-health Steering Committee in Zambia. The mandate of the committee is to spearhead the establishment of National Tele-health and integrate it into national policy of the Ministry of Health to add value to the provision of health care services to Zambians in the most efficient and effective way possible. Space technology can contribute to the improvement of global health. The paper points out a few less well-known applications that have either had a great impact or have the potential to do so. They include, the key role of space-based telemetry in the control of river blindness, radiation protection, global disease surveillance, WHO's Strategic Health Operations Center (SHOC), disaster relief, ambulance video links, and malaria modeling. But there is much more that can be done in terms of spreading the benefits of the technology, in particular bridging the Digital Divide, which exists between north and south. We suggest three areas in which space technology can contribute to achieving target 18 of the Millennium Development Goals: connectivity - make channel capacity available for health purposes; develop human resources for health to alleviate the overall worldwide shortages of health professionals, which is further aggravated by migration of professionals for a variety of reasons, including the quest for greener pastures abroad; and informing both health professionals and citizens.Item Open Access Utilizing Space-Based Technology to Advance Health Services in the Developing World(Presented at Med-e-tel 2005 Conference in Luxembourg., 2005-04-08) Lee, A.; Quality of CareSpace-Based Technology Applications to eHealth: Introduce the United Nations Space Applications Programme and its objectives in utilizing space-based technologies to advance health services in the developing countries.
