The main objective of this project is to analyze the possibility of implementing and adapting the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) into the Canadian context and apply it to the Spanish program at the University of Calgary. The methodology includes comparing the levels of the Spanish courses taught at this university with the "Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes: Niveles de referencia para el espaiiol" by the Cervantes Institute in 2006. The Reference Level Descriptors (RLD) will be compared with the individual levels of courses at the Spanish Department (levels 200, 300, 400 and 500) in order to determine where within the individual courses, Reference Levels begin and end. The last part of the thesis will explore the suggestions and steps to be taken towards the integration of the CEFR into the program in order to optimize the program and gain further recognition within and outside of the country.
