The demand for higher speed and reliability for wireless LAN (WLAN) has pushed the industry to introduce new standards in the market such as IEEE 802.11 n. This future standard makes use of MIMO and OFDM to provide higher reliability at higher speeds. This thesis presents a practical performance analysis of a MIMO and OFDM based WLAN, with the help of actual measurements which have been taken at residential and office locations. The performance impact of an OFDM parameter i.e. the length of cyclic prefix (CP) has been studied through capacity analysis and effort has been made to optimize the CP length. The effect of different number of antenna combinations on the performance of MIMO capacity has been analysed. This analysis also includes effect of antenna array orientation and increasing correlation between the antennas. Conclusions have been derived from the results of the analysis for the optimum choice of the parameters.
